Steamtown – Much More than a Railway Museum

Page

“STEAMTOWN: No, not an alternative energy source for suburbia, but once one of the most interesting and active railway museums in the country”

At least that’s what it was in 1977, and is now home to West Coast Railways Ltd., who run numerous rail specials across the UK. It is no longer a publicly accessible museum, but stands alongside Carnforth Station, made famous in the film ‘Brief Encounter’.

In 1974, the then “Steamtown” also hosted the “Locomotion ‘74” exhibition, which displayed brand new British Rail stock alongside the museum’s existing displays. Today, the location still holds occasional events, but is not so well known as it was perhaps.
